Toyota Alphard and Vellfire PHEV - details
The exclusive launch of the new PHEV models is currently limited to Japan. Toyota has fitted a battery pack, of which the details are not disclosed, that powers the minivans and delivers an electric range of up to 73 km. Toyota has equipped the new PHEV models with two electric motors, one at each axle; powering the minivans as per the driving requirements. Toyota also claims that it takes only 38 minutes to charge the battery up to 80% by using a 50kW rapid charger.
The petrol engine in use is the tried and tested 2.5L four-cylinder motor. The ICE powertrain and the plug-in hybrid give a total driving range of upwards of 1,000 km. However, considering the fact that the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are used for their multi-seat layout, the PHEV models get only six seats. It is due to the new battery pack and electric drivetrain mechanism. The models also get bi-directional charging from the engine, which helps in charging the batteries when drained out.
Earlier in 2024, Toyota Alphard and Vellfire were updated with new design and cabin changes. Hence, the PHEV models remain largely unchanged, expect the fact that they only come equipped with six seats.

Toyota Alphard and Vellfire PHEV - UAE launch date and price
Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are very popular minivans in the UAE. Additionally, Toyota considers the UAE to be its primary global market. Hence, we can safely assume that the new PHEV models are likely to debut in the UAE next year. It could very well happen before mid-2025. Prices of both models will be considerably higher than those of their strong-hybrid counterparts.
Our verdict
Toyota Alphard and Vellfire plug-in hybrid models are going to be successful, especially in select markets like the UAE. The pure electric range comes in handy for the short city sprints while the bi-directional charging means that the highway range is also higher than the petrol models. We hope that Toyota launches the new PHEV minivans in the UAE soon.
