Audi is developing the next generation of its A2 model. Unlike the previous generation model, the next-gen A2 will be an all-electric car. Audi has recently released new details about its performance and efficiency, claiming that its production version will be the most efficient Audi production car.

Audi A2 e-tron: What do we know so far?

Audi is nearing the production stage of the upcoming A2 e-tron. The brand had earlier revealed that it will launch the production model in Europe by late 2026 or early 2027.

The latest details revealed by Audi claim that the A2 e-tron will be the most efficient car it has ever made. The A2 e-tron prototype has achieved an efficiency of 7.81km/kWh in the WLTP preliminary testing, thus making it the most efficient Audi electric car.

While the brand did not release its powertrain and motor details for obvious reasons, the engineering team did reveal that the optimised design of its battery and electric motor setup has been curated for efficient everyday use.

Moreover, Audi will offer an ‘Efficient Package’ that further lowers its energy consumption to 0.9kWh/100km as compared to the standard version. Mind you, the previous generation A2 was also positioned as the most efficient car of the brand before it was discontinued in 2007.

The prototype version boasts a rounded-off front design where the front fascia is completely covered, save for an active cooling duct that opens only when the car is operating under high temperatures, or going fast, or being rapidly charged - to give an additional cooling source.

The sloping roofline, covered wheel arches, closed ducts, and an upright boot with an integrated spoiler have all been designed to keep the aerodynamic drag coefficient as low as 0.24 Cd. Other exterior highlights include the L-shaped daytime running LED lights, squared-off LED taillights, and covered aerodynamic wheels.

61 kWh battery for base variant with 453 km range

Audi will offer a 61 kWh LFP battery pack on the base ‘141kWh’ variant. 58 kWh of it will be usable, and it will be paired with a rear-mounted 190 bhp electric motor that will offer 453 km of WLTP range. This variant will offer 7.81km/kWh of efficiency.

Audi has equipped it with a new cell-to-pack design that improves packaging efficiency. Moreover, the new design eliminates the battery drain issue that is a recurring problem in current EVs when charged to 100 percent.

Audi has also redesigned the wall AC charging system, which now offers up to 89.6 percent efficiency. Meanwhile, the electric drivetrain is now 10 percent more efficient than the previous design. Audi has also added silicon carbide power electronics, thinner motor laminations to reduce energy transfer loss, and a new 10.2:1 transmission drive ratio that is designed for comfortable highway cruising.

Audi has scheduled the official reveal of the production-spec A2 e-tron for this fall season. The A2 e-tron will be available in the European market by early 2027.
