Volkswagen has taken the cover off its first-ever MQB platform-based pickup truck called Tukan. It will be sold in dual-cab and single-cab variants in the Brazilian market. The new 2027 Volkswagen Tukan has been specially designed for Brazil, but we think that it might be the perfect urban pickup truck that we need in the UAE.
2027 Volkswagen Tukan: Everything you need to know about it
Platform and design

The all-new Tukan pickup truck is VW’s first utility vehicle based on the MQB platform. Mind you, the MQB platform already houses multiple VW Group cars, including the Jetta, Tiguan, Golf, T-Roc, and Passat as well.
VW engineers have tailored the MQB platform to make it compatible with a dual-cab and a single-cab pickup truck design with a loading bay. The whole crux of the Tukan is to serve the Brazilian market, and it is derived from 76 percent locally assembled parts in Brazil.

The exterior design of the Tukan features a familiar fascia to other VW cars. It gets sleek LED headlights that are connected via an LED light strip, a big front grille with a hexagonal design pattern, a muscular front bumper with LED projector lights, rugged body cladding, vertical LED taillights, and pronounced wheel arches. Depending on the version, it gets steel wheels and alloys.
Volkswagen has not unveiled the interior yet, but we can safely say that it will feature a timeless design like other VW cars. The interior will focus on durability and comfort, while it will also offer features like wireless charging, ventilated front seats, digital cockpit, big infotainment screen, etc, depending on the variant.
Engine specifications

Multiple online reports suggest that the new Volkswagen Tukan pickup truck will offer a hybrid version of the 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol engine. This engine is already used on the T-Roc, which is a capable crossover.
Additionally, VW will offer this engine with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, depending on the variant. An all-wheel-drive option could also be offered on the range-topping variants. The 4MOTION AWD is likely to be used here.
Why does it make sense for the UAE?
The new Volkswagen Tukan is not a big and bulky pickup truck made for dune-bashing. However, it is a compact yet capable pickup truck that can be used to potter around the city, ferrying luggage and goods easily.
We suspect that the base variants of the Tukan will be more utilitarian, which will make it perfect for city business owners who require compact workhorses. Additionally, the 1.5 TSI engine is more than capable of taking over the UAE’s highway limits, as well as beating the summer heat of the Middle East.
Last but not least, the double-cab version can also serve as a commute vehicle for small families in the UAE. The loading bay keeps the practicality of the pickup truck, while the four-door cabin will ensure that a small family can travel easily in it.
More details about the new Tukan pickup are likely to be revealed in the coming days. Meanwhile, if you are searching for a used Volkswagen car in Dubai, look no further than Cars24 UAE.
