What makes the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 special?

As its name suggests, the Golf GTI Edition 50 has been specially designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hot hatchback in the international market.

It is based on the Mk8.5 Golf, and Volkswagen says that it is the most powerful Golf they have ever made, and it has also recorded the fastest time on the Nürburgring track.

Speaking of the engine specs, it is powered by the tried and tested 2.0-litre (EA888) turbo petrol engine. This powertrain is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox - sadly no manual option this time.

This powerhouse makes 325 PS and 420 Nm of peak power and torque, which is sent to the front wheels. With that said, the sleek Golf GTI Edition 50 can sprint 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 270 km/h - that too all stock!

Volkswagen tested the pre-production unit around the Nurburgring, and it completed the lap in 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds, which made it the fastest ever Volkswagen. This record is even quicker than the Golf R 20 Years, which gets more power and AWD benefit as well.

The ‘Special’ changes

To make the Golf GTI Edition 50 special, Volkswagen has loaded it with a lowered suspension with 15 mm lower ride height than the standard Golf GTI. It also gets sharper springs and the Dynamic Chassis Control for better steering feedback.

Meanwhile, it rides on the lightweight 19-inch forged wheels that save 3 kg per wheel. These wheels are draped with Bridgestone Potenza race semi-slick tyres for a magnet-like grip.

Visually, it gets the ‘Edition 50’ badges on the B-pillars, steering wheel, and door sills. It also gets a black roof and ORVMs with a side stripe that fades from black to red colour.

Meanwhile, the interiors get the iconic chequered seat fabric with dark green details, red seat belts, and an optional Akrapovic full exhaust system for a pure aural experience.

Volkswagen is also offering an exclusive Dark Moss Green Metallic paint shade, along with the four other paint scheme options.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 price and availability

The Golf GTI Edition 50 is exclusively available in the UK and certain “European regions”. It has been priced at an approximate €54,540 (AED 234,069 as of today’s exchange rate).

Volkswagen has said that it is currently “studying” the market for this special edition Golf GTI, and it is unsure whether it will be available in the UAE or not.
