Why is the Mercedes-Benz EQB being recalled?

As per the details leaked from the documents filed in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the USA, Mercedes-Benz is recalling 12,236 units of the electric EQB three-row SUV. The cited reason behind the recall is a potential fire risk, which could happen due to inefficient battery thermal management, leading to a short circuit in extreme cases.

While no such incident has been recorded as of now, Mercedes is taking its precautionary recall to ensure that no EQB owner faces any issue. As per the document, all owners are being notified about the recall, and Mercedes will offer a free battery replacement for the affected vehicles.

Moreover, the brand has revealed that the EQB models, which are not being recalled, are already fitted with a more robust battery. However, the weaker battery-equipped units have been identified and are being rectified.

What is the future of the Mercedes-Benz EQB?

Not long ago, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would not produce the EQB SUV anymore after the MY2025 models are sold. As per the online reports, the EQB will be replaced by the GLB EQ model, which will be essentially a rebadged version with cosmetic and feature updates.

The possible reason behind the discontinuation of the EQB is its low demand globally. The brand’s EVs are struggling to sell globally, including models like the G-Class EQ, which has been a big flop worldwide.

What does it mean for the UAE owners?

The latest recall affects US-based owners only. Mercedes-Benz has not announced any recall for the Middle East for the EQB.

Cars24 UAE says

Product recalls are a routine for every carmaker as identifying and rectifying faults is an important part of the car-making process. The latest recall of the Mercedes EQB in the US is to ensure that no unit faces fire risk, which the current battery could lead to.
