BMW has taken the cover off its latest M Concept Neue Klasse prototype model at the Le Mans event earlier this week. This latest prototype previews the future of the upcoming BMW M-spec models, and it is likely the pre-production version of the new electric M3 that is set to be launched in the coming months.

What is the new BMW M Concept Neue Klasse?

The new M Concept Neue Klasse is basically a prototype that has been revealed to showcase the future of BMW’s M models. It previews the new design, cabin, and electric platform, which will be used on a host of upcoming M-spec models.

Moreover, while the brand did not say anything regarding this, it is widely accepted that the M Concept Neue Klasse is the pre-production prototype of the upcoming M3 electric. Talking about the design, the car features a four-door shell with a wide footprint and a low-slung stance.

The front packs the Neue Klasse design theme with the new yellow M-spec daytime running lights and a V-shaped lower bumper with split aero dams. The front and rear bumpers also feature the track lights positioned vertically.

The aerodynamic profile is visible throughout the car, as it features sweeping fenders, a sloping roofline, and a ducktail rear end. Moving to the back, it packs the sharp, connected LED taillights, an integrated diffuser, and a boot-integrated spoiler.

This prototype also features the M-spec monobloc wheels and retractable door handles for a clean outlook. Meanwhile, BMW has previewed it in the Monza Red exterior colour that has a contrasting black roof and mirrors with carbon fibre finishing.

New interior layout and features

BMW M Concept Neue Klasse dashboard

The cabin design of the M Concept Neue Klasse is inspired by the new i3 sedan. The sloping dashboard packs the floating hexagonal infotainment system and a full-width BMW panoramic display under the windshield.

The double-D-cut four-spoke steering wheel features the black nubuck leather, which is the first-ever on a BMW car. The same material follows on the door panels and the roll bar as well.

BMW M Concept Neue Klasse front seats

The M Concept Neue Klasse features a driver-focused interior as it gets four race seats, but these will be replaced by the more comfortable and usable conventional seats when this concept takes its production form. The seats, meanwhile, have been finished in Bathrust Blue and Berry Red Merino leather, along with the race-type seat belts. BMW has also used natural materials all around the cabin to keep the sustainability factor high.

Since it is an M-spec car, there are a lot of “M” emblems inside the cabin, including the gear shift lever, seats, steering wheel, door sills, etc. BMW engineers have also equipped it with the M-specific LED cabin lights and a digital user interface with drive telemetry.

What powers the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse?

Since it is a prototype only, and BMW also says that it will not go into production, not many details regarding the powertrain were unveiled. All that is known is that it packs a battery pack larger than 100 kWh, and it gets the quad electric motors, along with an 800V architecture.

BMW has used the sixth generation of cylindrical battery cells, which have been mated to the all-new “Heart of Joy” control unit. The latter works in sync with the new BMW M Dynamic Performance Control, which sends the power to all four wheels depending on the traction and driving conditions. It also alters the traction in real-time.

The biggest step forward is the addition of wheel-specific brake and drive controls. The driver can control the drivetrain settings, acceleration, and braking through wheel-mounted controls. This makes a significant improvement in the track lap timings, as per BMW.

When will it launch?

BMW has no plans to launch the M Concept Neue Klasse. It is just a preview concept model to showcase the brand’s future M models. However, it will possibly house the upcoming electric M3 sports car, which is scheduled to debut globally in the coming months.
