What to expect from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet?

The upcoming G-Class Cabriolet will mark its return after 13 years. The brand had discontinued the previous soft-top G-Class in 2013.

The latest images of the soft-top G-Class prototype showcase that the upcoming model will be essentially similar to the hard-top standard G-Class. However, it will feature a redesigned roofline with a manually sliding soft-top canvas.

Apart from the soft-top, the Cabriolet version will bear the same design and features as the hard-top version. The prototype images are also identical to the current model, as it has the flat bonnet, slab-type doors, flared wheel arches, and a side-opening tailgate with a mounted spare wheel.

Similarly, the interior design and space will also remain unchanged on the Cabriolet. It is essentially a ‘wind-in-hair’ version of the G-Class, which was previously popular among the elites for its unique design and powerful performance.

Mercedes is yet to unveil the powertrain and engine options for the G-Class Cabriolet, but we suspect it will share the same engines as the hard-top version. Moreover, the Cabriolet may receive the EQ technology, thus making it available in the EV avatar as well.

As of now, the exact launch timeline is unknown for the G-Class Cabriolet. In fact, it could be named differently this time. We suspect that Mercedes will launch it in the coming months globally, and it will eventually be launched in the Middle East as well in 2026.

The G-Class Cabriolet was first introduced in 1979. It was originally launched with a short wheelbase and two doors. Mercedes sold it to the military and civilians, and it garnered the interest of the car community in particular due to its off-road abilities and nimble size with open-top motoring.

Mercedes also introduced a powerful, 6.0-litre, 630 bhp, AMG-powered version of the G-Class Cabriolet in 2017, called G 650 Landaulet. This was an exclusive model that was limited to 99 units worldwide.

It was further elevated by the Brabus tuning company by improving its design and enhancing its power delivery, badged 800 Cabrio and 800 XL Cabrio.

Cars24 UAE says

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet will be a niche version of the popular SUV, which will offer a distinctive road presence, the joy of open-hair motoring, and the robust performance of the G-Class moniker.
