Chery-JLR partnership has officially revealed its first Freelander production model. The upcoming Chery-JLR Freelander 8 was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. It will be launched in the global market next year. Read its complete details below.

What is the Chery-JLR Freelander 8?

Chery Automobile and JLR have been in a partnership for over 14 years. However, the Freelander nameplate is a new brand that both manufacturers have introduced for the global market. It takes its inspiration from the original Freelander SUV, and it will be positioned as a standalone brand.

Not long ago, Chery-JLR showcased the Concept 97 prototype SUV model. The new Freelander 8 is the production version of it, and it measures 5.1 metres in length, making it competitive to the Defender 110 and Defender 130 variants.

The Freelander 8 is based on the iMax platform, which has been designed to accommodate EV, hybrid, PHEV, and an 800V range-extender powertrains. The brand will introduce the Freelander 8 with all of these powertrains in the near future. Moreover, Chery-JLR plans to launch 6 new models under the Freelander name in the next 5 years.

The Freelander 8 boasts a conventional SUV design with an upright posture, flared wheel arches, functional roof rails, and skid plates on the bumpers. However, the front fascia features a closed grille with Freelander lettering and squared-off LED headlights with a sleek grille.

Meanwhile, the side profile of the SUV features a unique rear-quarter design that resembles the original first model of the Freelander. The rear design is also simplistic with the squared-off LED taillights and Freelander lettering on the tailgate.

The company has not revealed the interior yet, but the officials did announce at the Auto China 2026 car show in Beijing that the production-spec model features a full-length screen on the windscreen that displays the multi-information. It also gets a freestanding infotainment screen and five-seater layout with an airy cabin.

The production-spec Freelander 8 will also feature ADAS safety features along with LiDAR-based features, as the latter is positioned at the centre top of the roof.

When will it launch?

The Freelander 8 production model is likely to be launched in China by the end of this year. The brand officials say that it is a global model and it will also be introduced in other countries. Previously, the global launch was planned via the UAE, but the ongoing international tensions put the plan on hold.

Since Chery has a strong presence in the Middle East, and the Freelander 8 is a big SUV that suits the Middle East, we believe that it will be introduced in the GCC by the first half of 2027.
