What to expect from the Suzuki Jimny EV?

The latest spy image of the upcoming version of the Suzuki Jimny has attracted the attention of all car enthusiasts worldwide. The reason is the possibility of an all-electric Jimny, which no one saw coming.

While the world is moving quickly towards software-based EVs, Suzuki is taking its sweet time in developing electric vehicles. Irrespective of the low demand for EVs in the global market, the electric Jimny might make more sense for urban customers who prefer off-roading on weekends.

As of now, we do not have a lot of details regarding the powertrain it will have. But a close look at the spy image shows the dual electric motor configuration, which ensures that the electric Jimny will stick to its 4WD traits.

On the other hand, the camouflaged test mules look identical to the petrol Jimny. However, the closed grille with the twin sleek LED DRLs gives it a new fascia and a refreshing look.

The overall stance, size, and height of the electric Jimny look similar to the petrol Jimny. Another visible difference is the new design of the alloy wheels, which are more aerodynamic - possibly to increase the efficiency.

The test mule also has the twin foglights and an ADAS radar module on the windshield. Additionally, the leaf-spring suspension setup is also visible, and it looks mostly unaltered.

The biggest drawback of an electric Jimny could be its increased weight due to the batteries. Since the strongest aspect of the petrol Jimny is its lightweight, an increased kerb weight is likely to hinder the off-roading capabilities directly.

Jimny has been an iconic model of Suzuki worldwide. It is a capable off-road vehicle, and it is loved for its nimble size and agility on the trails. An electric version will most likely cater to fewer off-roading enthusiasts and more urban commuters.

When will the new Suzuki Jimny launch?

We believe that Suzuki is in no rush to update the Jimny lineup with an electric powertrain. Additionally, the brand has not shared any such plans of upgrading the Jimny range with an EV powertrain.

If the Jimny EV hits the roads in the future, we firmly believe that it will not happen before 2028.
