Modern cars have standardised numerous types of design and feature elements, which all carmakers are following due to the competition. Why are retractable door handles getting banned in China?

As per the latest announcement, China has ordered all automotive manufacturers to eliminate the retractable door handles from their products. The new law states that all cars are mandated to be fitted with the conventional door handle design, which can be operated from any angle, and all cars must have a mechanical release handle design.

This move comes after the recent high-profile accidents that took lives due to the retractable door handles locking the car, and not being designed to open up like conventional door handles. The new law is destined to come into effect from 1 January 2027.

Not just the exterior door handle, but the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has also announced that the interior door handle should be easily visible to the corresponding passenger’s position, which will make it easier to operate during emergencies.

Why are retractable door handles popular globally?

The flush-type or retractable door handles are often considered sophisticated and easier to use. They embed into the surface panels, creating a streamlined design approach that looks more aerodynamic and premium.

The retractable door handles were first introduced in the premium cars, which later became common on the mass market vehicles as well. Out of the competition, most manufacturers have shifted their focus on the retractable door handles.
