Mercedes G-Wagon Electric - Low sales
Â

Â
A latest report published by the German publication Handelsblatt, the electric G-Wagon has turned out to be a complete flop for the company. Since its launch last April, the company has sold only 1,450 units of the G580 EQ in the European car market.
Â
Moreover, the EV-crazy Chinese market has brought only 58 units of the G-Wagon EV. Meanwhile, the South Korean sales figure stands at 61 units, which is equally dismal as the Chinese sales numbers.
Â
In comparison, the ICE G-Wagon sold more than 9,700 units worldwide within the same time frame.
Â
The poor sales just keep on getting worse. In fact, the German carmaker has now decided to sell the upcoming “baby G-Class” only with the petrol or diesel engine options.
Â
Speaking to the German publication, a Mercedes-Benz executive stated, “The car is a complete flop. It is lying at dealerships like a lead”. Affirming this statement, another company insider told the publication that “Its sales have been low, it is a niche product”.
Â
Mercedes G-Wagon Electric - Why is it a flop?
Â

Â
The main reason behind the low sales of the G-Wagon Electric is its mediocre packaging. While it looks equally stunning as the ICE model, it does not perform as promised in the paper.
Â
The main reason why a luxury car owner opts for an electric car is its long range, spacious cabin, and comfortable experience. The G580 EQ has similar space to the ICE sibling; it offers the same features, and there is no flat floor, which is a trademark of EVs.
Â
The cherry on the top of the cake is its poor 473 km WLTP-claimed range, which depletes in the real world if it is used with its full potential. Speaking to the publication, a Mercedes official said, “People want six and eight cylinders in their G-Class”.
Â
Therefore, paying a big chunk of money for an electric G-Wagon does not seem reasonable to a lot of buyers. Hence, continuously low sales volume.

Mercedes G-Wagon Electric - Battery specs
Â
Powering the new G-Wagon electric is a 116 kWh battery, which is mated to the trademark EQ technology of Mercedes-Benz.Â
Â
Sending the power to all four wheels via four electric motors, the G-Wagon electric makes 579 bhp of peak power and 1,164 Nm of peak torque.Â
Â
It supports rapid charging, and by using a 200 kW DC fast charger, it can be charged 10-80% in just 32 minutes. Meanwhile, with an 11 kW AC charger, 0-100% charging takes around 12 hours.Â
Â
Our conclusion
Â
The Mercedes G-Wagon has been one of the most iconic and popular SUVs around the globe. Made specifically for the Middle East for the first time, the G-Wagon has turned the tables for rivals like the Range Rover Defender. However, its electric iteration could not stand on its promised value and has become a flop.Â
