2025 Volvo XC70 - What to expect?

First things first, the upcoming XC70 ditches the ICE powertrain and gets powered by a strong PHEV (Plug-in hybrid) engine, the details of which have now leaked online.

While the XC70 is slated for an official unveiling later this year, its nearly complete details are posted on China's Ministry of Industry and Information website, as a part of the homologation process.

The XC70 will be a crossover/station wagon rather than a conventional SUV. 

It will focus on efficiency and passenger comfort, and its market positioning will be between the XC60 and XC90 models.

The platform on which it is based is also completely new and tailored for the plug-in hybrid setup.

2025 Volvo XC70 - Engine, specifications, performance

As per the website details, the XC70 measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, 1,650 mm in height, and 2,895 mm in wheelbase, which indicates that it will have a roomy cabin experience.

Additionally, it will be offered with two PHEV options, one of which is a 39.63 kWh NMC battery version that weighs 2,275 kg (unladen).

The other battery pack is going to be a 21.22 kWh LFP that weighs 2,110 kg (unladen).

Volvo has coupled these battery options with a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which develops 161 bhp of peak power. 

While its complete performance details are unknown yet, the top speed mentioned in the leaked document is 180 km/h (electronically limited).

Meanwhile, the bigger battery version of the XC70 offers an EV-only range of 180 km, while the smaller battery pack can do 100 km on pure EV power.

Mind you, the range figures are mentioned as per the CTC methods. The WLTP range will be significantly lower than this.

Volvo will also offer an AWD variant of the XC70, which will be equipped with dual electric motors on both axles, making it sprint 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

2025 Volvo XC70 - Design

The XC70 looks like a mix between the Volvo EX90 and the XC60. However, unlike the other SUV models of the brand, the XC70 is more of a station wagon.

Its front design has identical design cues to the EX90 as it uses the Thor Hammer LED DRLs, a closed grille, and active aero dams for performance and efficiency.

The dual-projector adaptive LED headlamps are positioned vertically in the front bumper.

On the side, it gets flush door handles for a clean look, while customers will have options of 19- to 21-inch alloy wheels.

The rear design is more conventional with the vertical LED lights and a bland-looking bumper.

Since the leaked photo set does not have the interior details, we can only assume that the XC70 will get an identical design for the cabin to the EX90.

Safely assuming, the cabin is going to get a light colour leather upholstery and theme. 

The dashboard is likely to get the conventional outlook with a large vertical infotainment screen that will get OTA updates as well.

Moreover, the digital cockpit, LiDAR ADAS safety features, and other comfort and convenience features are likely to be carried over from the XC60 and EX90, combined.

As far as the launch of the XC70 is concerned, Volvo will launch it in China initially. 

The official debut timeline for the Chinese market is expected in the second half of this year.
