2027 Lotus Emira: PHEV engine details

Lotus Emira

As per a recent media interaction with Lotus Group CEO Feng Qingfen, the next-gen Emira is likely to get a new plug-in hybrid engine option. Although not many details were revealed, he did tell the media that future Lotus cars will get a turbo-hybrid powertrain.

The CEO also revealed that the future product strategy is largely influenced by Chinese management, which is tilted towards hybrids. As far as this new powertrain is concerned, it will deliver up to 1,094 km range with rapid charging as standard.

Some online reports hint at a Mercedes-sourced powertrain tailored with the new Hyper Hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology. Online rumours suggest that a Mercedes-sourced 4.0-litre, V8, twin-turbo engine can be used to power the upcoming Emira.

Current engines of the Lotus Emira

Lotus Emira

Lotus offers two different engines on the Emira as of now. The first is an AMG-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, which is further offered in two power outputs: 365 bhp/430 Nm and 406 bhp/480 Nm.

There is also a 3.5-litre, V6, twin-turbo engine that is sourced from Toyota. It offers 406 bhp and 420 Nm of power and torque.

Lotus is facing losses globally

Lotus has been facing a decline in sales and revenue globally. In fact, the brand has reported $313 million of revenue loss in the first half of this year. The company has already cut down 550 jobs, citing a change in global policies, increased tariffs, etc.

The brand has also dumped its plan of going fully electric by 2028, citing the low demand for EVs globally. Rather than going fully electric, hybrid is the new way.

Our verdict

The future of Lotus cars looks interesting as the brand readies itself to tackle the changing market challenges with the new hybrid powertrain. Emira, being a sports car, is expected to change the future for good with this new engine.
