Volvo multi-adaptive seat belt - What is it?

Volvo multi-adaptive seat belt

The passenger car safety pioneer, Volvo, has introduced a new multi-adaptive seat belt, which changes its tension depending on the individual and the type of impact.

This new seat belt type is designed to protect passengers by adapting to the traffic variations and the individual using it.

The new upcoming seat belt can use the real-time data from the car's exterior and interior sensors to customise the safety of the passengers by adjusting the seat belt tension.

It can also sense the build of an individual, including metrics like height, weight, body shape, seating posture, and more.

So, in a case where the crash impact is hard due to high speed, a large occupant is likely to experience a high tension load to save from head injuries.

Similarly, if the impact is at low speed, a small occupant will experience a low tension load to save from rib fractures.

How does Volvo's multi-adaptive seat belt work?

Volvo multi-adaptive seat belt

A regular seat belt in modern cars works with load-limiters. These load-limiters are responsible for generating tension load, which in turn saves occupants during an impact.

However, a regular seat belt is not designed or customised for individuals, as it is impossible.

This is exactly what Volvo's multi-adaptive seat belt does. It works over multiple expanding load-limiter profiles, which are automatically adjusted by the system as per the changing conditions.

The multi-adaptive seat belt uses real-time data from the car's exterior, interior, and crash sensors, including ADAS features.

This data is continuously monitored, and during an impact, it adjusts the load-limiters, which are further adjustable from three to eleven units, thus providing multiple combinations as per the individual.

Additionally, these sensors monitor the type of the crash by reading characteristics like the direction, speed, and passenger posture.

The first car to feature Volvo's multi-adaptive seat belt will be the upcoming Volvo EX60, which is scheduled for a global debut in 2026.

Our conclusion

The new multi-adaptive seat belt from Volvo is a revolutionary safety upgrade. It not only provides improved safety for the occupants but also smartly decreases the chances of facing collateral seat belt damage during an impact. We are curiously waiting to see this new seat belt soon in other passenger cars as well.
